Message from Cuban doctors in exile to Marco Rubio and Bob Menéndez: "We really need your help"

A group of Cuban doctors who decided to "be free" and who are stranded in several Latin American countries have written an emotional letter to Cuban-American senators Bob Menéndez and Marco Rubio to support the initiative that both politicians presented on January 10 in the United States Senate to restore the Cuban Medical Professionals Parole, which Obama removed. All these reasons should suffice to aspire to be free Cubans, they affirm in their letter. "We are called deserters, traitors, worms. We are exiles from our country and we cannot return because the consequences would be catastrophic," they insist. The doctors say that the vast majority of Cuban professionals who decided not to return to Cuba do not have permanent jobs and cover hourly shifts, poorly paid; facing arrests and scams. They don't have work permits and when they get sick they ask their colleagues for help.

For the rest of the world we are builders, waiters, merchants, bowlers, farmers, with great respect for these professions, but unlike nationals, we are exposed to another system of exploitation such as the more than 16 hours of work, xenophobia, no provision of medical services, wages of 6 to 8 dollars a day, where it is impossible for us to support an income and at the same time feed ourselves. " Doctors consider that they left one type of farm to enter another. That is why many have chosen to cross the jungle and risk their lives and have ended up being deported to Cuba, but the Island has refused to receive them. "We know that they are fighting hard to help us, to give us the opportunity to be free people, to be useful to a society where human rights are respected, where we can work with dignity and with our own efforts. We say NO to exploitation, NO to human trafficking, NO to socialism. We do NOT regret being here. We do NOT want to return to the Cuban dictatorship. "
